Jobmates Pty Ltd ("Jobmates", "we", "us", or "our") operates the Jobmates platform (jobmates.com.au), a community platform connecting backpackers with employers across Australia, including a verified employer review system.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
By registering on Jobmates, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to this Privacy Policy.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Account Registration
When you create an account, we collect:
- Full name
- Email address
- Password (encrypted)
- Nationality and visa type (to assess work entitlements)
- Profile photo (optional)
2.2 Payslip Verification
To ensure the integrity of our employer reviews, we require users to upload a payslip as proof of employment. During this process, we extract and retain only the following data:
- Employer name
- Employer ABN
- Employer address
- Pay rate and classification (industry/job type)
- Position/role held
- Contract type
2.3 Employer Reviews
When you submit a review, we collect the content of your review, your star ratings, and the date of submission. Reviews are linked to your verified employment record.
2.4 Technical Data
We automatically collect standard technical data including IP address, browser type, device identifiers, pages visited, and session duration via cookies and analytics tools (including Google Analytics).
3. How We Use Your Information
We use your personal information to:
- Create and manage your account
- Verify your employment history before publishing a review
- Display verified employer reviews on the platform
- Moderate content to ensure compliance with our community guidelines
- Process and manage your subscription
- Send you service-related communications (account confirmations, review updates)
- Improve the platform through analytics and usage data
- Comply with our legal obligations
4. Payslip Processing & Data Minimisation
We take a data minimisation approach to payslip processing. When you upload a payslip:
- Our system automatically extracts only the 7 data fields listed in Section 2.2
- The extraction is reviewed by our moderation team as part of review verification
- The original payslip file is permanently deleted from our systems upon completion of verification
- Extracted data fields are stored securely and linked to your review record
We strongly recommend you redact any personal banking details, tax file numbers (TFN), or other sensitive information from your payslip before uploading.
5. Cookies & Analytics
Jobmates uses cookies and similar technologies to improve your experience. We use:
- Essential cookies: required for the platform to function (authentication, session management)
- Analytics cookies: Google Analytics to understand how users interact with our platform
You can control cookie preferences through your browser settings. Disabling essential cookies may affect your ability to use the platform.
6. Disclosure of Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your data with:
- Service providers: hosting, payment processing (e.g. Stripe), email delivery, and analytics providers who process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements
- Moderation partners: trusted third-party moderators bound by confidentiality obligations
- Legal authorities: where required by Australian law, court order, or to protect the safety of our users
Extracted employment data (employer name, ABN, address, pay rate, classification, role, contract type) may be displayed publicly on employer profiles in aggregated or anonymised form.
7. Your Rights Under Australian Privacy Law
Under the Privacy Act 1988, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate or outdated information
- Request deletion of your account and associated personal data (note: reviews will be retained in anonymised form — see Section 9)
- Opt out of direct marketing communications
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at www.oaic.gov.au

8. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including SSL/TLS encryption in transit, encrypted storage, access controls, and regular security audits. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password for your Jobmates account.
9. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active, and for a reasonable period thereafter to comply with legal obligations. Payslip files are deleted immediately after verification. If you request deletion of your account, we will action this within 30 days. Upon deletion, all personal information linked to your account (name, email, profile) will be permanently removed. However, reviews you have submitted will be retained on the platform in fully anonymised form — they will no longer be associated with your identity in any way.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or prominent notice on the platform. Continued use of Jobmates after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
